What: Community Meeting to Keep the CELL Alive and Well

Why: CELLspace's future is in jeopardy. The collective and Board
members are struggling to pay monthly operating costs. We need to
refocus community support and revitalize our fundraising efforts and
collective energies!

When: Monday, November 19th @ 7pm

Where: CELLspace
(2050 Bryant Street btwn 18th & 19th, Mission District SF)

Who: the CELLspace community: anyone who has passed through our doors
(or has been wanting to!) to attend an event, receive services, create
some art, participate in community building, or for refuge.

The Evening will provide an update of the current status, a gathering
of creative thoughts and ideas, and an opportunity to get involved in
our metamorphosis.

The NEED:
* Events bookings
* grant-writers
* Youth service providers
* publicity/outreach management
* Save the CELL campaign development which includes: reaching out to
CBOs, local government, the media, former stakeholders and current
stakeholders
* monetary and in-kind donations

The GOAL:
* Revive the collective process within CELL, and engage resources: In
2005-2006 alone, CELLspace welcomed over 80,000 people into the space
with services, educational opportunities, events, space and more = 1
in every 8 residents in SF have been through our doors. The purpose of
these meeting is to ignite these folks who deem CELLspace a resource
and vital ficture within San Francisco's artistic, youth development
and social justice community. We will walk away with working groups to
tackle 4 major areas: fiscal health/debt management, events

Ever Been To CELLspace? It needs your help.

CELLspace needs our help and
>> could use a shout out to peeps who have a positive
>> connection with the
>> joint. could use a post from our circles of
>> allies and tribes.
>> Please do what we can. It really is the 11th hour
>> there and if a new wave
>> of support doesn't come in soon, then I am afraid
>> the cell will simply fade
>> away. They basically ran out of grant money, forgot
>> to stop all paid staff,
>> had to borrow $ to pay staff, never got more grants,
>> went into debt, fired
>> all staff, and had no volunteer program or caretaker
>> program to pick up the
>> slack. Its dire and they are asking for help. I
>> feel sick about it and am
>> calling on people who have a vested interest to step
>> it up. I know its
>> short notice, but do what you can.
>>

2007 HAIGHT STREET FAIR / NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT!!

Well, here the Haight Street Fair is in 2007 with a small minority of squeky wheels making some noise about our fair.

In Pablo's passing a two year old group has increased their demands on us. Some folks from the Haight Ashbury Neighborhood Council (H.A.N.C.) have heard gossip of their intentions of either trying to take over the fair or force us under their control.

Members of the Haight Street Fair Board have sat in a few meetings with HAIA, CVIA HANC (the real group that represents the neighborhood, without having to say it) and a couple of other groups that are out of the haight village or have one member Impovement Group status.

Supivisor Ross, District 5; has hosted a few meetings for us. He has been helpful in trying to create some fair ground for everyone. With all of his efforts we are still in conflict with a group that does not act in good faith towards us.

In one meeting that Ross called in city hall a member of the HAIA, Michael O'Connor (Whom is a third owner of the nightclub, THE INDEPENDENT; on Divisidaro St) spoke out strongly against the Haight Street Fair. Thanks Michael O'Conner!

We went into our ISCOTT hearing last Thursday and the president Mr. Lee put a hold on our street closure permit hearing for two weeks.

Please spread this information out!

The attack on street fairs is an increase of killing SF culture.............I love my urban city very much............and do take seriously that WE here in SF are in the middle of a culture war right now.

Brad and the How Weird Street Fair got their permits after being rejected. But with huge new demands, their time was cut from 8pm to 6pm, and Brad cannot have his fair there in 2008!

To show some support you can come down to our hearing on:

THURSDAY MARCH 22ND @ 10am SHARP!
@ 1 South Van Nes Ave. 7th Floor San Francisco

or you can email your support to:

Cindy Shamban
Department of Parking and Traffic
415. 701.4683
Cindy.Shamban@sfmta.com

Lets not let this happen guys and grrls.......we need your love and support.

Valentines Day SF Pillow fight! spread the word

Valentines Day SF Pillow fight! spread the word

PILLOW FIGHT!!!
This just in from an anonymous source…making its way back around to the US, a massive Pillow Fight is being planned for 6pm on Valentine’s Day (Wednesday February 14th) at San Francisco’s Justin Herman Plaza (at Market and Embarcadero).
Directions to Justin Herman Plaza
1 Market St

www.pillowfight.info

Rules:
1) Tell everyone you know about PILLOW FIGHT!!!
2) Tell everyone you know about PILLOW FIGHT!!!
3) Wait for the Ferry Building clock to strike 6:00pm
4) Don’t hit anyone without a pillow (unless they want it)
5) Don’t hit anyone with a camera
6) HAVE FUN!!!

(Rain plan: put your pillow in a plastic bag, see Rules 1 - 6)
Please bring only pillows filled with natural materials (like cotton, hemp, and down) and not synethetics which will wash into the Bay and harm marine life, thank you.

History of Pillow Fight Club
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pillow_Fight_Club

Leave it to a place like San Francisco to host the most visible incarnation of the Pillow Fight's flash-mob-esque gathering, and subsequent public pillow fight. I would say that a safe thousand people were milling around Justin Herman Plaza at Embarcadero and Market Streets in Downtown San Francisco. As the Ferry Building's clock struck 6pm, the lovey-rage could be cut with a knife from the air around. As 6pm approached, two lines were formed, people wielding pillows took one last breath of air: and running full speed at one another, a Braveheart-like scenario played out. The feathers were everywhere, pilling up to six inches in some parts.

Call For Makers!

Dear Makers,

We are pleased to announce Bay Area Maker Faire 2007!

Organized by the staff of MAKE and CRAFT magazines, Maker Faire is a newfangled fair that brings together science, art, craft an engineering in a fun, energized, and exciting public forum. The aim is to inspire people of all ages to roll up their sleeves and become makers. This family-friendly event showcases the amazing work of all kinds of makers--anyone who is embracing DIY and wants to share their accomplishments with an appreciative audience. Last year, we had 20,000 people at Maker Faire.

Maker Faire Bay Area will take place May 19-20, 2007 at the San Mateo Fairgrounds. We are also adding Maker Faire Austin for October 20-21, 2007 at the Travis County Fairgrounds. This call is primarily for Maker Faire Bay Area but you can indicate if you are interested in participating in Maker Faire Austin.

We encourage you to join the fun and propose a maker exhibit, performance or workshop. You can submit a proposal through the web using the link described below or you can come show us your work at a Maker Faire "audition" on Saturday, February 24 at TechShop in Menlo Park, CA.

http://www.makerfaire.com

Proposals: We invite proposals for Maker workbench exhibits, workshops, presentations and performances for the Maker Faire. We are interested in proposals from individuals as well as from groups such as hobbyist clubs and schools.

Maker Workbench: Our standard setup for Makers is a six-foot long workbench. You can use this workbench to display your work and/or demonstrate how you make something. Some makers don't need workbenches, typically because they have a large object or they set up outside. Please provide a short description of what you make and what you will bring to Maker Faire. Please link to photographs or videos of what you make. Let us know about any requirements you have, such as electricity, Internet, ventilation, etc.

Interactive Performance: We're seeking performances that will engage and entertain the attendees and enable them to interact in a fun way. The performances may be tied to a stage or roving through the fairgrounds as a kind of street theatre. Performances could be musical or theatrical, but they could also be a collaborative building process. For example, you might work with attendees to put something large together in an hour.

Presentation: These includes audio-visual presentations intended for showing a project (or process) that cannot be brought to the faire, or a special project that requires AV resources. These presentations are limited to 20 minutes. Please describe the topic of your presentation and what kind of media (audio/video) that you will have. As a general rule, PowerPoint presentations are not appropriate for this event unless they are unusually entertaining.

Demonstration Workshop: A demonstration workshop is a show-and-tell session on how to make something. We're looking for makers who can demonstrate (and teach) particular skills, techniques or processes. You should start off by explaining your materials and tools and then step-through a build process, sharing your knowledge and interacting with the audience. Sessions should be under 30 minutes in length and may be repeated on the program. Please describe the subject of your workshop and what kind of setup you need for it.

Application Form: Please go to the following URL and fill it out to apply for participation as a maker. http://makerfaire.com/bayarea/2007/proposal/

All proposals will be reviewed and we will notify makers of acceptance via email by March 19, 2007.

NOTE: Presenters whose talks are accepted will receive free registration to Maker Faire. We cannot pay for travel and accommodations. (We do make exceptions under some circumstances.) If you have any questions about participating in Maker Faire, please contact Natalie Villalobos by email: info@makerfaire.com. Please let Natalie know if you plan to come to the audition at TechShop.

People, what the hell was up with the Sahara Extravaganza?
As far as I know we were promised the Hottest New Years Bash of the year which was supposed to last until morning...
Well, we were rudely urged to leave by having bright spotlights turned at us just after 2AM.

Honestly, other than some of the performances there was nothing hot about this event mostly because the managing staff seemed to be so on edge, they spread a layer of hostile frost over the attendees.

The guy managing people at the entrance just before midnight was so rude I actually thought he was joking when he gestured me to talk to his hand after I tired to inquire about how to get an entrance bracelet to a friend. Honestly, with the exception of Sam, who was attending Will Call and who offered me a friendly word and warm smiles, I never actually felt welcome at this Cell Space event.

I mean, yes, I know Cell Space is a drug free zone, but people -- for next year will you all please take a Chill-Pill!!!!

Missed Connections at AlterState

ok so i havent gone to cellspace much. BUT
when i was at alterstate on saturday night i saw a beautiful man there who definitely intrigued me to the point that im writing about it on a tribe.
psh but what are tribes for but to find people who intrigue you?
well,
i was totally the girl with the HUGE pirate hat walking around.
im sure if any of you were there, it might have been a bit noticeable.
back to the point,
this man, was about 5'8'' maybe shorter, black hat, goatee, beautiful eyes.
came with a gorgeous woman wearing a black tank and glasses, maybe reddish hair.
but i did not intrude. i guess, untill now
if any of these descriptions mean anything to anyone. i would appreciate a guess, a theory, a name, etc...

parties like this irk me when i come away trying to find someone who i most likely will never see again.
but i thought, simply, anyone who goes to cellpace parties, more than likely are socialized within the certain circle that more than likely might have a tribe.
so, here's my one in a million shot.
im leavin it up n the air.

peace

Looking for a Seamstress....

$$$$ Need a Seamstress.... $$$$Today, 1:59 PM
So at first I thought I wanted someone to teach me how to sew, while that is still a goal it is a longer term goal then I had thought. For right now I need someone to do a bunch of sewing things for me, I am willing to pay a reasonable rate or will work out some sort of compenstation for this person. Here is a brief summary of what I am looking for, and if things work out it will be an ongoing thing because I always have things I want done.

So first off I have a bunch of little repair items that need to be done like straps popped off and small little stuff like that. A couple of rips in things and maybe a couple of more complex repairs, nothing crazy, I want these things done immediately and done decently. About 10-15 separate items..

Next I have some clothes that I would like modified, some are major modifications some are small things. Hell I'm not sure if some of the things I want are even possible, some creative imput and thoughts would be very welcome, but after you see what I am talking about you will totally understand what I am going for. There are about 30-50 projects like this and more all the time as I shop about the city.

After that, I have some things that I want created. I have some fabrics and patterns and a whole slew of ideas, again creative imput would be greatly appreciated, and the sky is the limit, I have spent thousands of dollars on the clothes I have, and there are so many more things that I want but can never find.

So because of my current situation, I would like someone to come to my home talk about all these things with me, figure maybe like an hour long converstation a cup of tea, and at the very least any compentant seamstress will at least be able to do the repair work I want done so whomever will end up with at least that much work. I would rather the work be done somewhere other then my house, however I do have a sewing machine that I do not know how to use that is still in the box. I would need this person to shop for materials, (I will reimburse for any supplies purchased on my behalf, and would be willing to to give some cash up front for those such purchases).

You must have a somewhat open mind and it would be nice if someone got into the work, but it isn't necessary for you to like what you are doing, just as long as it gets done reasonably well. I am very mellow, laid back, patient, but have some pet peeves when it comes to clothes. You will have to be to take constructive feedback and be willing to do something again if it isn't the way I would like it. I would like to pay someone per piece, I don't like the concept of paying someone per hour, to me that encourages people to do things in a too time consuming way. Also I am not a perfectionist, but these clothes would need to be high enough quality to be able to wear to events/parties/etc.

Drop me a line and we can set up a time for your interview, if you have a portfolio of work that would be nice to see, it isn't necessary however. Please email.

Thanks

Monika

Aloha all,

My name is Michael (Faethe) "Faith" and I would be honered to be contacted for any events held at Cell Space. I can play downtempo, reggae, intelligent hip hop, breaks, or psychedelic trance. My all time greatest high is playing music for fire dancers! but I love to lay down the niceness for anyone who feels it.
I just recently got back from Hawaii and am dying to spin in the Bay area for mystical events and shiny people.

Please contact me if you are interested.

Blessings...
TRIBE SAYS OUR DANCE PHOTO ALBUM IS OFFENSIVE

TRIBE SAYS OUR DANCE PHOTO ALBUM IS OFFENSIVE and that we must be classified as a mature tribe or remove the offensive photos. Take a look and tell me if this is not the most ridiculous thing you have heard.

http://scdc.tribe.net/

Question: Why is Tribe's management denying us our freedom of speech and expression instead of defending it in court? I know that we, as a community, would support the defense of our civil rights. I would donate $50 on the spot!

Aphrodesia goin to West Africa

Hello everyone and happy holidays! A few of you may have already heard our big news, but we wanted you all to hear it straight from us:

APHRODESIA WILL TOUR GHANA AND WEST AFRICA IN FEBRUARY!!!
Yes, it's true. The African Showboyz (perhaps some of you caught our set with them at the Earthdance Festival in September) have invited us to tour Ghana, Togo, Benin and possibly Burkina Faso and Nigeria with them for one month. The tour is being booked now, and we have also just been invited to play the Africa Unite Festival (Bob Marley's 61st birthday celebration, produced in part by the Marley family: www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHome...rtikel.php in Accra and Kumasi, Ghana on Feb 3 and 5.
We are also arranging to travel in a biodiesel bus, helping to showcase and promote this alternative fuel in a part of the world that has been devastated by the environmental and social effects of the petroleum industry.
The chance to travel and play music and learn from the land that has inspired so much of our music is incredibly exciting and mind-boggling for us. The fact that we may be able also to help promote alternative energy in West Africa while doing it makes it all seem almost too good to be true....and in a way it is, because there's one catch:

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!
We are in the process of raising the funds to help us make it to Ghana, and we have set up a donation page on our website-
www.aphrodesia.org/GonnagotoGhana.htm
Every little bit helps, so please consider us when you're making your lists and checking them twice....
Large donations can be tax-deductible through the Clean Fuel Caravan Coalition, please write us about that if you are interested. We are also soliciting sponsorships from sustainable businesses- if you are interested in that or know anyone who is, please write us about that too (contact@aphrodesia.org).

You can also, of course, help us by coming to any of our upcoming shows- www.aphrodesia.org/iastic.htm - including this Friday at the Elbo Room in SF, Dec 30 at the Anon Salon/String Cheese Incident party in SF, and NYE in Humboldt County at the Mateel Community Center!

What, you want more news? That wasn't enough? Sheesh!
All right, we've got brand new sweatshop-free t-shirts! Help us show everyone how cool they (and you) are by becoming an Aphrodesia celebrity model here (don't worry, it's easy)!!- www.aphrodesia.org/celebmodel.htm

We've got some cool new photos from some recent shows, and from a very funny night in a San Diego laudramat....
www.aphrodesia.org/anomic.htm

Aphrodesia is on Tribe and MySpace
www.aphrodesia.tribe.net
www.myspace.com

You can now download Aphrodesia at any of these fine sites-
